Product Description

FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND

(Treatment Produces Smooth Black Coating on M.S)

  1. INTRODUCTION:

This hot oxidising process produces a smooth, glossy, jet black finish on M.S., Ferrous metals and some of its alloys.  This black finish is very decorative and when sealed properly with a suitable rust preventive like ASFOSIL-DW, it affords lustre and long term protection to the parts against corrosion and oxidation.

Notes :

  1. While preparing any fresh bath always add the chemical slowly to water under constant stirring.

  2. If parts are absolutely clean (i.e. no oil, grease, rust or scales are present on surface) then steps 1-5 in the above process can be avoided.

  3. All components to be blackened should be absolutely clean before they enter the blackening bath.

  4. Highly polished and ground parts will produce an extremely lustrous glossy black finish.

  5. Since the blackening bath is highly alkaline all the precautions mentioned in III, should be observed strictly during handling and working of the blackening process.

    (P.T.O.)

  6. The bath should always be maintained at 138°C+2°C for best results.  For accurate temperature control, use of electric immersion heaters with temperature controller is advisable.  Approximately  1 KW heater will be required for 50 liters bath volume.

  7. When fresh bath is prepared, the level of the bath should be noted and this level should be continuously maintained by a very gradual continuous addition of water through a pipe connected to the blackening bath.  However this level should never be exceeded.

  8. Regular additions of FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND to the salt bath can be made slowly and gradually directly into the bath with the help of a shovel.

  9. Abrupt bulky additions of water to the hot blackening bath will cause spurting and splashing.

  10. All components should be freely suspended in the bath, without touching the bottom.

  11. With continuous working the bath gets contaminated with red oxide of iron (sludge) giving rise to patchy coatings.  This sludge should be skimmed off from the top as well as bottom but only in the hot condition.

  12. To get consistent and proper blackening results, addition of FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND to the blackening bath, should be made regularly at an approximate proportion of 100 gms of FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND for every 2 kgs of steel processed.  The specific gravity of the bath should be maintained at 1.50 to 1.53.

  13. If the blackening bath boils at a temperature above 140°C then the coating obtained will be slightly brownish.  In such a case, add water to lower the boiling point to 140°C.

  14. If the blackening bath boils at a temperature less than 135°C, then the coating will be bluish.  In such a case, add a little quantity of FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND to get the desired black finish.
