About FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND

FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND

(Treatment Produces Smooth Black Coating on M.S)

  1. INTRODUCTION:

This hot oxidising process produces a smooth, glossy, jet black finish on M.S., Ferrous metals and some of its alloys.  This black finish is very decorative and when sealed properly with a suitable rust preventive like ASFOSIL-DW, it affords lustre and long term protection to the parts against corrosion and oxidation.

Notes :

  1. While preparing any fresh bath always add the chemical slowly to water under constant stirring.

  2. If parts are absolutely clean (i.e. no oil, grease, rust or scales are present on surface) then steps 1-5 in the above process can be avoided.

  3. All components to be blackened should be absolutely clean before they enter the blackening bath.

  4. Highly polished and ground parts will produce an extremely lustrous glossy black finish.

  5. Since the blackening bath is highly alkaline all the precautions mentioned in III, should be observed strictly during handling and working of the blackening process.

    (P.T.O.)

  6. The bath should always be maintained at 138°C+2°C for best results.  For accurate temperature control, use of electric immersion heaters with temperature controller is advisable.  Approximately  1 KW heater will be required for 50 liters bath volume.

  7. When fresh bath is prepared, the level of the bath should be noted and this level should be continuously maintained by a very gradual continuous addition of water through a pipe connected to the blackening bath.  However this level should never be exceeded.

  8. Regular additions of FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND to the salt bath can be made slowly and gradually directly into the bath with the help of a shovel.

  9. Abrupt bulky additions of water to the hot blackening bath will cause spurting and splashing.

  10. All components should be freely suspended in the bath, without touching the bottom.

  11. With continuous working the bath gets contaminated with red oxide of iron (sludge) giving rise to patchy coatings.  This sludge should be skimmed off from the top as well as bottom but only in the hot condition.

  12. To get consistent and proper blackening results, addition of FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND to the blackening bath, should be made regularly at an approximate proportion of 100 gms of FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND for every 2 kgs of steel processed.  The specific gravity of the bath should be maintained at 1.50 to 1.53.

  13. If the blackening bath boils at a temperature above 140°C then the coating obtained will be slightly brownish.  In such a case, add water to lower the boiling point to 140°C.

  14. If the blackening bath boils at a temperature less than 135°C, then the coating will be bluish.  In such a case, add a little quantity of FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND to get the desired black finish.

Safe Storage and Long Shelf Life

This compound is supplied in HDPE drums or bags to safeguard product integrity. It should be stored in a cool, dry place with containers tightly sealed to maintain its effectiveness for up to 24 months. Although highly alkaline and corrosive, following the manufacturers storage and handling guidelines ensures both safety and long-term reliability, supporting consistent quality in surface treatment operations.

FAQs of FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND:

Q: How is FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND applied to iron and steel surfaces?

A: To treat surfaces, dissolve the compound in water as per the manufacturers guidelines, heat the solution to 140C150C, and immerse the cleaned iron or steel components. The chemically reactive solution blackens the surface, creating a strong, corrosion-resistant finish.

Q: What are the key benefits of using this blackening compound?

A: FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND offers a uniform, matte-black protective layer that enhances corrosion resistance and aesthetics while minimizing light reflection. Its high purity and industrial-grade formulation ensure consistent results and extended component life.

Q: When should I use this product for metal treatment?

A: This compound is ideal whenever you need to blacken or protect iron and steel items, such as during manufacturing, maintenance, or restoration processes. It is especially suitable for applications requiring durable surface finishes in industrial or manufacturing environments.

Q: Where should the compound be stored to maintain its quality?

A: Store FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND in a cool, dry location with the container tightly sealed. Avoid exposure to moisture and direct sunlight to preserve its efficacy for up to 24 months as indicated.

Q: What precautions should be followed when using this compound?

A: As the compound is highly alkaline and corrosive, wear protective gloves, goggles, and clothing during handling. Follow all provided instructions and safety data to ensure safe application and prevent chemical burns or accidents.

Q: Can FEROXY BLACKENING COMPOUND be used on metals other than iron and steel?

A: This blackening compound is specifically formulated for use on iron and steel. Applying it to other metals may not yield the desired protective finish or may cause adverse reactions; use only as intended.
